“It Tasted Like Joy”: How a Warm Shawarma Brought Back a Childhood Moment for Ahmed

1–2 minutes

In a camp surrounded by rubble, tents, and the smell of burning plastic, 10-year-old Ahmed Al-Swarka held a warm shawarma meal with both hands. His eyes lit up.
“I hadn’t smelled meat like that in months,” he said. “It tasted like joy.”

That day, Dignity for Palestinians (D4P) had delivered 300 freshly prepared shawarma meals to a displacement camp in Nusierat. It was part of a hot meal initiative launched after weeks of families surviving on canned goods and dry staples. The timing of the initiative was never better.

Ahmed’s smile wasn’t just about hunger. It was about the return of something familiar. Something that reminded him of evenings with his siblings before their home was destroyed.

We met Ahmed by chance. One of our volunteers was documenting distributions when she caught sight of a group of children huddled near a torn tent. They were quiet, watching. When meals reached them, Ahmed was the first to speak.

“I am very happy to taste meat, I wasn’t sure that I would be getting the chance to eat it,” he said.
